On Friday morning, our wonderful volunteers came out to help, even though it was the hottest day of the year.
Their task for the session was to weed the Ladies Mile wildflower meadow. Under the guidance of Cheshire Wildlife Trust, we removed the most invasive plants, such as Dock, Nettle, and Hogweed, which would become over-dominant if left unchecked.
Sustained by chocolate biscuits and plenty of water, we completed the section from Northwich Road to Warren Close in three hours. In our next session, we plan to finish the job by weeding the remaining stretch of the wildflower meadow.
We would welcome more volunteers to help us maintain the area. We generally meet twice a month on Friday mornings. You can find our work schedule on our Events page.
While we worked, we were delighted to see the meadow thriving with a variety of flowers, including Oxeye Daisies, Buttercups, Red Clover, Common Knapweed, and Red Campion. For the first time, we also spotted Hedge Bedstraw, Greater Bird’s-foot-trefoil, and Common Figwort.
This meadow is a vital part of the Knutsford Bee Trail—a 5 km route that loops through Knutsford from The Heath to St John’s Wood—highlighting the importance of our local flora and pollinators. We encourage everyone to explore it and get involved.
With continued care, the wildflower meadow will improve over time and provide a haven for pollinating insects. If you can spare some time to help, it would be greatly appreciated. The saying “many hands make light work” truly applies!
