Through the morning mist on Thursday I spotted some digging near the water fountain.
What I found was a workman digging carefully around the roots of a lime tree to install a standpipe, which will be used in the future for events such as the May Day Fair. It will be a big improvement on the system used in the past, whereby the water in Manchester Road was tapped, causing a real traffic hazard. The tap has yet to be connected up to the mains. After that it will be locked unless permission has been given to use it.
