Spring Conservation Work – 28th March

March Volunteers

On Friday, the volunteers continued where we finished last month by removing gorse and tree saplings from the heather bed on the edge of the nature reserve.

Gorse is vigorous and will overrun the heather if not controlled. Yet, it provides a valuable food source for pollinating insects at this time of year. Indeed, the gorse was glowing golden-yellow, in full bloom, on the bank above the heather, attracting hoverflies and cute bee-flies (Bombylius species). Therefore, we left that area uncut.

We want to thank our fantastic volunteers for their hard work and the Cheshire Wildlife Trust for guiding our efforts.

We are looking forward to our next nature conservation workday in two weeks. Please join us if you can.
