Heathland Management – 21st February

Volunteers Cutting Gorse

Friday’s Nature Conservation Workday brought out a dedicated band of volunteers, undeterred by the rain and winds forecast. Our tasks for the day focused on heathland management, specifically the removal of gorse and tree saplings from two areas of heather. This work is essential to prevent the heather from being overtaken by scrub and trees.

Comparing the photos illustrates the difference they made.

After Gorse Cutting

In the morning we worked in the sandpit and, after lunch, we moved to the area adjacent to the grassland.

While there, we were pleased to see that the interpretation board for the nature reserve had been reinstalled after being removed for repairs. We are grateful to one of our volunteers for his skilled renovation of the wooden frame, which had rotted after ten years of exposure to the elements.
