We kicked off our new series of monthly nature conservation days on Friday. Our mission for the first day was to clear the paths. Cheshire Wildlife Trust provided us with the tools and assisted us as we walked through the nature reserve, trimming the encroaching vegetation. Everyone had a great time, and we were pleased with our improvements to the paths.
During future sessions, we intend to tackle various jobs to conserve nature and make the reserve a pleasant place for everyone. Jobs will include:
- Keeping the footpaths passable
- Controlling Holly and other dominant plants
- Removing saplings and Gorse from the Heather areas
- Planting extra species to increase biodiversity
- Maintaining nest boxes
We hope more volunteers will join us for these monthly events. There are many benefits for participants, including physical exercise, social interaction and the opportunity to immerse oneself in nature.
We will promote the events on this website and social media. Please check back regularly or consider becoming a ‘Friend’ to get email updates. You can ask for this through our contact page.
Our work on The Heath always leads to fascinating discoveries, and Friday was no exception. Autumn is the time for fungi and fruits, so we were delighted to see brightly coloured Yellow Brain (Tremella mesenterica) on dead tree branches and Crab Apples (Malus sylvestris) ripening on the edge of Ladies Mile. The joy of discovery is one of the rewards of our conservation work.
Thank you Kevin. I really enjoyed the day.As you say good exercise and meeting people while connecting with nature. I would encourage others.
