Replacement Commemorative Plaque

Visitors to the Big Heath may have noticed a new plaque in the ground beneath the Turkey Oak near the old drinking fountain on Manchester Road. Knutsford Town Council installed the plaque to replace the one fixed to the tree because the growing bark is gradually obscuring it. As our Town Ranger says, the tree is eating it!

The new plaque explains that a tree was planted to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII in1920. It does not mention that the current tree is a replacement, planted during the Festival of Britain in 1951. Knutsford Heritage Centre holds the plaque from the original tree. We do not know why it was replaced.

The new plaque is jointly funded by Knutsford Town Council and Friends of The Heath and installed with permission from the landowner, Tatton Estate.
